Player Profile: Mac Jones

Height: 6′3″
Weight: 214 lbs
School: Alabama

Why you’re drafting him…

He has the smarts, the competitiveness and adequate arm-throwing skills. The type of quarterback that falls a tier below Trevor Lawrence, Justin Fields, Zach Wilson and Trey Lance, but can purely throw the ball as good as any of them. He has great pocket awareness, sense of where his receivers are, and finesse throwing downfield where only his receivers are able to make the reception. If the throw is not there, he throws underneath to keep the drives going. He has the ability to be a starter in the league, and is more like a Tom Brady/Kirk Cousins type of player, or as I like to say, an “old school” type of quarterback. Jones enters the 2021 NFL Draft after his junior season (first as a true starter) completing 311-of-422 (77.4%) passes for 4,500 yards, 41 touchdowns and just four interceptions. Jones proved during Senior Bowl week that he doesn’t need the star players that he had from Alabama in order to be successful; answering a question mark that several draft analysts have about him

Needs to improve…

Many may say that Alabama quarterbacks haven’t panned out in the NFL (still waiting on Tua Tagovailoa). We have one true season out of Jones, which is clearly not an ideal sample size. Look at someone like Mitchell Trubisky and how he’s fared so far in the NFL. Jones’ biggest flaw is the lack of great arm talent and he isn’t a quarterback that’ll pick up many yards with his legs. The game at the next level could be a challenge for Jones as the league is using more of the dual-threat QB, so he will have to learn how to adapt fast and throw the ball on the run…faster

Predictions for the 2021 NFL Draft…

With the solid tape that Jones provided from the 2020 college football season, he proved himself to be a viable starting quarterback at the next level. He has the smarts, accuracy and the crisp throws that have teams looking his direction. A team with a solid supporting cast, including an established running game, would fit well for Jones. I can see the Denver Broncos taking Jones in the first round if he’s still on the board. If he falls past Denver, I don’t think he’ll have to wait much longer before hearing his name called

Dynasty fantasy football spin…

QB’s will be coming off the board fast in the NFL Draft, but with the fantasy perspective behind it, Jones should be viewed as a third-round pick in 1QB leagues and an early second-round pick in SuperFlex leagues. He should be the fifth quarterback selected after Trevor Lawrence, Justin Fields, Zach Wilson and Trey Lance
