Sunday Sidepiece: NFL Week 8

Did you miss me last week?

Sometimes the sidepiece can take a lot out of you, so I needed a week to refuel and come back strong for Week 8 of the NFL season.

But I’m back and ready to provide you with a confident list of sleepers that you should consider for your starting lineup in the event you currently have them resting on your bench.

Cheers to taking a chance with a little sidepiece action this weekend – here’s what I have on tap for you…

Allen Lazard, WR, Green Bay Packers vs. Kansas City Chiefs

It’s looking more likely that Davante Adams is going to be a true game-time decision, and since you may have to make a call at the wide receiver position before the Sunday night game, I’m here to tell you that Allen Lazard is the guy to plug into that WR or Flex position. Despite both Geronimo Allison and Marquez Valdes-Scantling being active last week, Lazard led all Packers’ wide receivers playing 51 of 60 offensive snaps. Aaron Rodgers has always been the type of quarterback that can make multiple WR’s fantasy relevant in the same game, so even if Allison or MVS break out this week, there’s a good chance Lazard can warrant usage as a WR2 or Flex.

Ty Johnson, RB, Detroit Lions vs. New York Giants

Did you spend the rest of your FAAB money on Ty Johnson this week? Well if so, don’t let him rot away on your bench. Insert him into your starting lineup already this week. He’s on the right side of a great matchup against the Giants, a team that has given up the fifth-most fantasy points to running backs this season, and should see a heavy workload as the team’s primary ball carrier with Kerryon Johnson now on IR. The Giants are fresh off handing Chase Edmonds a career day, and while it may be a stretch to think Johnson matches Edmonds’ three-TD performance, he still feels like a safe bet to top 100 yards while (hopefully) finding the end zone.

Ryan Tannehill, QB / Corey Davis, WR / A.J. Brown, WR, Tennessee Titans vs. Tampa Bay Buccaneers

What? A sidepiece threesome? That’s right. For the first time in the history of Sunday Sidepiece, we’ve found our way into a threesome. And while I wouldn’t suggest using all three of these guys on the same fantasy team, I’m definitely not opposed to starting any of them against a very beatable Buccaneers’ secondary. The Bucs rank near the bottom of the league when it comes to allowing points to fantasy QB’s and WR’s, and if Ryan Tannehill is given enough time in the pocket, expect either Corey Davis or A.J. Brown to warrant Flex-position play at the very least.

Josh Allen, QB, Buffalo Bills vs. Philadelphia Eagles

If you’re rich at quarterback and have the luxury of not having to start Josh Allen on a weekly basis, I suggest you take a deep look into using him this week against the Eagles. He provides an unexpected safe floor – scoring under 15 fantasy points just once so far this season – and has elevated his play as a true passer recently throwing for four TD’s over the last two weeks. While this isn’t a terribly impressive stat, add to the mix what Allen provides as a runner, and you have a solid fantasy contributor. The Eagles have allowed the 10th-most fantasy points to QB’s this season, which should help lead Allen to one of the better quarterback finishes in fantasy football this week.
